# VerixID — A Mathematical Witness for Digital Files

VerixID is a mathematical witness that provides cryptographic proof of integrity and proof of existence for digital files.  
Files are never uploaded. Only a mathematical fingerprint (hash) is processed.  
Verification can be performed independently using a Record ID and standard cryptographic methods, without relying on VerixID.

## Core Principle

VerixID follows the principle: "Verify, don't trust."  
All results are deterministic and can be independently reproduced and verified.

## How It Works

1. Select a file directly in the browser (documents, images, videos, etc).  
   The file is processed using SHA-256 on the user's device to produce a unique fingerprint.

2. Only the fingerprint and timestamp are sent to the system.  
   The original file never leaves the device (zero-custody).

3. VerixID records the fingerprint in an append-only ledger with a timestamp and digital signature.  
   The system issues:
   - Record ID (public identifier)
   - Ownership Key (private proof of ownership)

The record can be verified independently at any time.

- Ledger: Immutable, append-only, with retention up to 10 years by system design  
- Execution: Edge computing for low latency and isolated execution  
- Privacy: Zero-custody (the system never accesses or stores file contents)

- Ownership Model: Ownership Key as cryptographic proof of control  
- Output:
  - Signed verification record  
  - Certificate of Authenticity (COA) as a structured representation of verification data
